ARTIST RESEARCH - Nick Cave
Nick Cave (born 4th February 1959) is an American sculptor, painter, dancer, performance artist and professor. He has created the sound suit series which are wearable fabric structures that are bright, whimsical and often made with found objects. His later sculptures focus on colour theory and include mixed media and large scale installations. He lives in Chicago and directs the graduate fashion programme at the School Of The Art Institute of Chicago. He is continuing to work on the soundsuits.
His first career retrospective museum exhibition was at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago 14th May 2022-2nd October 2022 and at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York 18th November 2022-10th April 2023. He received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in June 2022.
As a child Cave would repair hand-me-down clothes. He learned to sew which lead to his first sound suit. Influences of African art traditions, armour, ceremonial dress, couture fashion and design textiles, as well as stereotypically feminine objects, are present in his work to express many concepts.
His work deals with strategies to negotiate the real-life stakes of vulnerability and consequence by transforming the experience and environment. In his performance art, he aims to create situations where diverse communities come together to share the experience, making sure to distinguish his pieces as art rather than costumes.
Cave describes himself as a messenger not as an artist as his work frequently deals with spectacle and responsibility. One work that follows this principle is Augment. This piece consists of five assemblages made with more than 1,000 inflatable lawn decorations that are sewn together. The sculptures were on display in the Cycloma at the Boston Centre for the Arts in Boston's South End from August 8th 2019- September 13th 2019. On 14th September the piece was taken to the streets in the form of a parade with the mission to spread joy through the South End and Upham's Corner neighbourhoods in Boston.
Cave creates most of his pieces in a workshop with several assistants. Sound suits are sculptural costumes enveloping the wearer's body in materials including but not limited to dyed human hair, sisal, buttons etc. The sound suits camouflage the body, masking and creating a second skin that conceals race, gender, and class, making the viewer look without judgement. The finished pieces bear some resemblance to African ceremonial masks and costumes. His suits make sound when worn. He has produced over 500 sound suits since the first creation in 1992.
I really love his artwork, i find it so cute and childlike! It reminds me of what a child may imagine, like a friendly monster.
I really love the bright colours and textures within Nick Caves artwork and I find it really imaginative and creative, unique and funny in a good way, I really love it. I find it interesting and so unique and I dont think ive ever seen anything like it and I really do love it. It reminds me of things id imagine as a kid.
I really love how fluffy and personal it looks, and how it looks almost bouncy and light hearted.
His artwork makes me happy and sets such a friendly and fun mood and its so nice and colourful too. I think the colour is almost vital in Nick Caves artwork, as without it, it may give a completely different vibe, maybe even creepy. But with colour, its so cute and loveable, and overall I really do enjoy and love Nick Caves Artwork and I find his artwork popping, unique, different in a good way, awesome and sweet.
I find it friendly, funny, content almost and almost even nostalgic to me! I think that Nick Caves artwork is Epic and really Great! And really cool and amazing too!!!!!
